Vehicle implicated in fatal hit-and-run

A 71-year-old Jersey City man has been arrested and charged in a fatal hit-and-run last year.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the man, Mohammad Ali, was arrested on Friday and charged in the October hit-and-run that killed 85-year-old Mumtaz Chaudhry of Jersey City.

Police were called to the location of the incident — Fairview Avenue and Monticello Avenue — at approximately 6:45 p.m. on October 20. Chaudhry was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later put out a call for help in locating the vehicle apparently driven by Ali, a light colored Toyota Sienna. The minivan was found a day later.

Ali is charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Death, and Endangering an Injured Victim.

He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and released pending his first court appearance, which is tentatively scheduled for February 13, 2024.
