If one judges Rob Menendez's chances of being reelected by the number of endorsements he's received from elected officials, the odds of his returning to Washington for a second term are looking brighter.

Today the Mendendez campaign announced that State Senator-elect Angela McKnight, State Senator-elect Raj Mukherji, and State Senator Brian Stack have all thrown their weight behind the freshman congressman.

“The constituents that Rob and I share in Jersey City, Bayonne, and Kearny have all benefited from his unwavering efforts on their behalf in Washington and in our communities,” explained McKnight. Mukherji called Menendez a “relentless advocate” for their shared constituents. According to Stack, Mendendez “has always put our communities first, providing high-quality constituent services to our residents.”

After his father, Sen. Bob Menendez, was indicted for bribery, Menendez looked to be vulnerable. Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop has been the most prominent Menendez detractor. “When Senator Menendez first got indicted, I thought maybe I could separate the father and son, and I even expressed that to Rob. As time went on, I realized it is impossible to do that and the situations are tied together. It’s not a secret that Rob got to Congress only because of his dad’s influence, so it’s fair to move on from Rob now because of that same influence.” So far, however, it appears that few local politicians are taking the same tack.

Sensing Menendez's vulnerability, however, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla has decided to him on, as has Jersey City businessman Kyle Jasey.

Before today's announcement, Menendez had already amassed an enviable list of endorsements including Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco, Bayonne Mayor James Davis, East Newark Mayor Dina Grillo, Guttenberg Mayor Wayne Zitt, Harrison Mayor James Fife, Kearny Mayor Carol Jean Doyle, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner and County Executive-elect Craig Guy.
