A pedestrian is in critical condition today following a hit-and-run crash last night on the West Side.

According to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, a 39-year-old Jersey City woman was hit last night at approximately 7:45 p.m. near Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard.

The driver left the scene. Investigators have located “a vehicle of interest.”

The woman, who suffered multiple injuries, is being treated at Jersey City Medical Center.

Last night's crash would constitute the seventh hit-and-run involving a pedestrian this year.

At a rally on Monday night calling for the resignation of Councilwoman Amy DeGise, who was caught striking a bicycle rider and leaving the scene in July last year, Colin DeVries of Safe Streets Jersey City termed crashes involving pedestrians an “epidemic.”

Prior to last night's crash, there have been six reported instances this year where pedestrians have been struck by hit-and-run drivers, according to DeVries.

  • January 4. A woman was struck while in a crosswalk at 1st Street and Jersey Avenue.
  • January 19. A 79-year-old woman was struck while in a crosswalk at 9th Street and Hamilton Park. The woman was hospitalized for six days. The car was reportedly driven by a ride-share driver with a passenger inside.
  • January 26. A 54-year-old woman was struck from behind while crossing Boyd Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard.
  • January 30. A child's foot was run over as the child crossed Pavonia Boulevard near PS-23.
  • February 2. A 54-year-old woman was struck at Communipaw Avenue and Monticello Avenue. She was taken to Jersey City Medical Center.
  • February 3. A 48-year-old woman was struck and seriously injured at MLK Boulevard and Woodlawn Avenue.

These crashes are “just what's been reported so far” said DeVries.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are reportedly investigating the case. They ask anyone with information to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous here. All information will be kept confidential.
